Update on Cabin Rebuild Project at Camp Y-Wood!
Background:
First, our thanks to so many of you for answering our call for help last year when an arsonist destroyed the existing Main Cabin just as camp was set to open for the season. With donations from our generous sponsors, grant foundations and our insurance claim, we raised funds as well as 75 in-kind items, and opened camp on-time for the 2010 season.
Current Status:
Since then, we've been busy! Originally, we intended simply to rebuild the Main Cabin in time for the opening of Camp Y-Wood this season. However, during the planning phase, we opted to enhance the building in order to provide campers with a more robust camp experience. To this end, the cabin will…
- be almost 3-times larger - providing an inviting, central meeting place, especially during inclement weather;
- be insulated - making it available in fall and spring seasons for after-school and weekend youth activities;
- have indoor bathrooms (a first at Camp Y-Wood!).
Building Schedule & Cost:
Because of the increased size and plumbing, we must install a septic system. This necessitated obtaining state permits, which delayed the rebuilding process and added costs to the project.
To assure the safety of our campers, construction will begin in late August, after camp closes for the season. Our contractor, Jeff Woods Construction of North Andover, estimates completion will take between 60 and 90 days, weather permitting.
The total cost for the cabin rebuild is $183,000. We have already raised $120,070, thanks to generous donors, grant foundations and our insurance claim. We plan to fundraise for the remaining $62,930, in order to avoid dipping in to our Rainy Day Fund.
