Every September 26th, we host – along with the Lawrence Senior Center, the Mayor’s Health Task Force of Lawrence and Delamano – a Memorial Walk to bring awareness to the plight of domestic violence victims and hope to survivors. The walk, now in its 12th year, is held in memory of Gladys Ricart, who was murdered in 1999 by an ex-boyfriend on her wedding day as she stood next to her bridesmaids and groomsmen.
For the walk, women are encouraged to wear wedding dresses or dress in all white, and men are encouraged to wear all black. This type of dress is worn to symbolize mourning for all victims of domestic violence.
The walk takes about 30 minutes, and begins and ends at the Senior Center.
